RESERVE MY SPOT

Since 1995, Joshua Davis, an American designer, technologist, author and artist in new media, has made a career as an image maker using programming, he writes his own code, to produce interactions with users and to generate visual compositions according to rule-based, randomized processes.

Davis had a role in designing the visualization of IBM’s Watson, the intelligent computer program capable of answering questions, for the quiz show Jeopardy

His work has been inducted into the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, National Design Triennial 2006 “Design Life Now”, and has work in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Since 2000, he has lectured globally about his work, inspirations and motivations at museums, galleries, institutions, art festivals, etc… and has spoken at the TED (2005) and 99U (2013) conferences about his career in algorithmic image making and open source.

PAINTING WITH SOUND

In our digital age, the computer is capable of extraordinary feats, and we dive into the possibilities in this week-long workshop. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to create dynamic audio reactive graphics or play in the space of live concert visuals. We cover Minim, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) and grouping the audio spectrum into ranges using linAverages; applying window filters and understanding the difference between mp3 and wav; applying audio data to animation on screen; working with audio-driven animation in 2-D and 3-D space; using audio data to control a lighting system; and creating a texture-mapped planet that dances to your voice.

PAINTING WITH SOUND

Session 1

Environment setup, getting processing working with Sublime text 3 - install HYPE and MINIM libraries

Session 2

Working with minim to get audio playback - explore FFT and WINDOW

Session 3

Understand the difference between compressed and un-compressed audio (MP3 vs WAV) - also move full spectrum data into groups of ranges.

Session 4

Move audio data into an array - and build a sound visualizer of the grouped ranges.
