RESERVE MY SPOT

After graduating from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1999, Dmitry worked for ten years on protein folding problem at the Institute of Protein Research, Pushchino. He defended PhD thesis in 2006 entitled “Theory of protein folding rates”. From 2010 to 2013 he worked in Technical University of Munich, on the signal peptides coming from mass-spectrometry based proteomics. Starting from 2014, Dmitry works in the Evolutionary Genomics lab in CRG on the structural determinants of epistasis.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
ABOUT DMITRIY
HARBOUR.SPACE

BASICS OF CALCULUS

The presented module “Basics of Calculus” includes a hands-on course on limits, derivatives, sequences and integrals. The strong emphasis is made on the applied importance of the given material, so, the consideration of a lot of diverse examples is extremely important here.
The covered topics show the power of mathematics. Derivatives are used to calculate maximum or minimum values of a function or parameter. Integrals are used to calculate area under the plot of a function, average values, and volume of three-dimensional symmetrical figures. The material of basic level will be offered in the first two weeks of the module, while the third week will include some material on more advanced topics, just to describe horizons of the considered mathematical apparatus.
All the topics represent the straight course, so for understanding the next topic is important to understand previous ones. However, all the material can be explained in easy language, with real-life analogies. The aim of the module is to show the amount of diverse tasks that the suggested approach can solve. So, the students will see the power of the world of derivatives and integrals.
