The course is dedicated to all most relevant topics of modern cryptography. It covers the full spectre of security notions and corresponding adversary models that define theoretical and practical properties of cryptographic mechanisms that are currently used. All widely used primitives, algorithms and protocols are observed in the course - together with reviewing of their vulnerabilities, theoretical and practical attacks and most important results of security assessment. 

Two most important protocols - IPsec and TLS - are deeply studied, together with the history of attacks and countermeasures against them. The final part of the course is dedicated to the problems of practical applications of cryptography, including most discussed topics, such as blockchain technologies, IoT, backdoors and security of implementations (HSMs, smart cards and tokens, digital signature servers).

Session 1

Main principles of cryptography: historical overview and modern concepts of security.
Confidentiality. Adversary models for confidentiality

Session 2

Stream ciphers (with examples, incl. A5). Block ciphers (with examples, incl. DES, AES) and modes of operations (incl. ECB, CBC, OFB, CFB, CTR)

Session 3

Integrity and authenticity. Adversary models and basic concepts. Hash functions (incl. SHA-2 and SHA-3) and MACs. Randomness and pseudorandomness. HMAC. PRFs, KDFs

Session 5

First test.
Practice session: TLS Record; theoretical and practical attacks

Session 4

AEAD modes of operation. Protecting channels with symmetric cryptography.
TLS Record. IPsec ESP

Session 6

Public key encryption (RSA, ElGamal encryption system). FFC and ECC.
Key exchange protocols (DH(E), ECDH(E)). CMS encryption mechanisms based on EC

Ekaterina was born in 1992 in Russia. She graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University (Computer Science Department) in 2015.

She has been working in the field of cryptography since 2013, and currently she is lead engineer-analyst, responsible for all activities of the company in the field of standardisation of cryptographic mechanisms. Ekaterina has an extensive experience in synthesis and cryptanalysis of the security algorithms and protocols. She is an expert in Russian Technical Committee “Cryptography and Information Security” (TC 26) of Russian governmental standardisation organisation (Rosstandart). She is the author of more than 10 standards and specifications in Rosstandart, TC26 and IETF, including “The use of the Russian cryptographic algorithms in TLS 1.2” and “Guidelines on the cryptographic algorithms, accompanying the usage of block ciphers.”

EVGENY
ALEKSEEV

Head of Cryptographic Research Unit, CryptoPro LLC

Evgeny attended Moscow State in the department of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, from 2007 to 2011, earning his PhD in Mathematics and Physics.

After more than 15 years in the field of Cryptography, Evgeny now works at CryptoPro as their Head of Cryptographic Research Unit. His work includes the development and optimisation of cryptographic algorithms, as well as the analysis of cryptographic algorithms, protocols and systems. He even extends his writer’s arm to inform the world of what’s new in the work of CryptoPro by writing posts for corporate blog. Throughout his storied experiences, he has produced more than 10 articles in Russian journals on subjects related to current research interests (cryptographic properties of Boolean functions, cryptanalysis, etc.), 3 RFC documents (rfc 8133, rfc 7836, draft-irtf-cfrgre-keying-13),
4 articles on Cryptology ePrint Archive.
