CONCEPTUAL THINKING
IN ANIMATION
DANIEL SAVAGE

We offer innovative university degrees taught in English by industry leaders from around the world, aimed at giving our students meaningful and creatively satisfying top-level professional futures. We think the future is bright if you make it so.

Combinatorics and graph theory lay at the heart of discrete mathematics and computer science. In the course, we begin with a brief review of the fundamentals of combinatorics---counting, permutations, binomial coefficients, and the pigeonhole principle---and then devote most of the course to the fundamentals of graph theory. We cover the most common definitions and ideas of graph theory, proving important theorems and introducing important algorithms, but mostly aiming to simply establish the common language of discrete mathematics and computer science.

Daniel Savage is a Graphic Artist and Animation director based out of Los Angeles. Daniel’s background in music and design has helped to develop a look that can best be described as visual rhythm. Through the use of simple forms and wit, he is able to explain complex ideas. His work has been recognized by the ADC Young Guns, Webby Awards, and Society of Illustrators to name a few. He has taught at SVA and NYU, and created the film festival Yule Log 2.0.

Session 1

 Intro
 What is replacement animation?
 Being inspired by your surroundings
Animation principles

Using a single form as a starting place, you will walk around the city taking photos of that same form and use it to create a 30 second film.

Session 3

How to apply the concept of replacement animation in other ways

BIBLIOGRAPHY

This class will be all about thinking conceptually in motion. By thinking abstractly and looking at the world differently, you’ll be able to come up with original concepts and fresh perspectives. We will also take an in-depth look at rhythm and compelling movements using simple forms. Taking these experimental ideas you will then explain a complex idea in the simplest way possible.
