EXPERIENCE DESIGN (XD)
DAVID MIKULA

Experience Design is the discipline of envisioning the future ways people will interact with digital/physical experiences from start to finish: what users do, how they feel, and why it matters. XD combines imagination and rigor, digital and industrial design, research and prototyping, storytelling and entrepreneurship.

Experience Designers are an emerging and important role within organisations. Talented Experience Designers are visual visionaries and confident collaborators that understand the social, emotional, and cultural impact of their work—rewarded for being in-tune with the ever-changing landscapes of technology, media, and business.

David Mikula is a design leader and new media artist based in New York City.

David designs beloved experiences, builds soulful brands, and nurtures radically creative cultures.

Over the past sixteen years, his work has been recognized for its striking balance of impact and experimentation, intention and play. He builds thoughtful roadmaps for products as well as he designs human interfaces for new technologies. Easily weaves design strategy into decision-making and crafts emotional narratives across media. You can expect that he will always put his energy toward making the world work for 100% of humanity.

As an artist: David’s body of work explores the benefit and consequence of vulnerability in the age of acceleration.

As founder of FRIENDS and professor of experience design: David invents better, fairer futures and inspire others to do the same.

He’s a friendly beardo always up for a beverage and meeting new friends. Say hello sometime.

In this class, students will be challenged to design a real-world experience and become familiar with industry methods and tools. They will be exposed to: techniques of transforming abstract concepts into tangible experiences; the power of storytelling, enchanted objects, and “Magic Circles”; and ultimately the impact designers can have on the world.
