Several years ago, David Zmiaikou obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University Paris-Sud (Orsay) under the supervision of Professor Jean-Christophe Yoccoz. After that, he visited the mathematical institute IMPA in Rio de Janeiro thanks to the Balzan research project of Professor Jacob Palis. As a part of David's European Post-Doctoral Institute (EPDI) fellowship, he worked at:
- Erwin Schrödinger Institute for Mathematical Physics, Vienna, Austria;
- Institute for Mathematical Research, Zürich, Switzerland;
- Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, Bures-sur Yvette, France;
- Max Planck Institute for Mathematics Bonn, Germany.
Then Zmiaikou did postdoctoral research in DNA analysis at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom.
The goal of the course is to provide the necessary background in elementary algebra. On one hand we will recall algebraic notions already seen in high school, on the other hand, we will try to deepen understanding and see them from the perspective of a university level.
SKILLS:
- Algorithms
- Combinatorics
- Data Analysis
- Discrete Optimisation
- Dynamical Systems
- Geometry
- Group Theory
- Software Engineering
- Web Design

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
ABOUT DAVID
This is a crash course on algebra and number theory. We will start by refreshing basic useful notions such as ratio, percents and proportions, and will explain how to manipulate them and apply them to practical problems. Then we will consider arithmetic and geometric sequences, finding formulas for summing first several terms of such sequences. A large part of the course will be dedicated to modular arithmetic, including the Euclidean algorithms and applications to cryptography.

Harbour.Space is a university created by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. We focus on meeting the demands of the future, while traditional education providers are too often stuck in the past.
We’re one of the only European institutions completely dedicated to technology, design and entrepreneurship, and our interdisciplinary courses are taught by some of today’s leading professionals. Our aim is not only to equip students with the knowledge to take on the real world, but to nurture, create and shape tomorrow’s tech superstars.
